Henry Darcy Medal Lecture by Demetris Koutsoyiannis
Convener: A. Montanari
Oral Programme
 / Thu, 23 Apr, 18:30–19:30  / Room 31

The Henry Darcy Medal is presented to Demetris Koutsoyiannis for his outstanding contributions to the study of hydrometeorological variability and to water resources management. The Darcy Medal Lecture will be introduced by a citation delivered by Timothy Cohn.

Demetris Koutsoyiannis is professor at the National Technical University of Athens. He has focused his research career on strengthening the foundations of stochastic hydrology, often by courageously tearing down flawed ideas and rebuilding sections of the discipline anew. His work has addressed problems in probabilistic analysis of extreme events, disaggregation modelling, characterization of rainfall data, evaluation of model reliability and robustness, coupling of hydrological models, the role of entropy in hydrological systems, and, most recently and importantly, interpretation of time series corresponding to processes with long-term persistence. All of these are critically important for water management issues. His contribution in the latter field spans from studying the history of water technology and management during the antiquity to developing decision support tools for the management of large hydrosystems based on nonlinear optimization methodologies that incorporate stochastic descriptions of natural variability and future uncertainty.
