This session is targeted towards studies which investigate the nature and the consequences of the dynamical coupling between the stratosphere and the troposphere. This includes contributions which examine the dynamical mechanisms for the two-way interaction between the stratosphere and the troposphere and which analyze the role of this interaction for predicting atmospheric variability on time scales ranging from weeks to centuries. We are also interested in papers which investigate the ability of models to simulate stratosphere-troposphere coupling and which examine how the faithful representation of this coupling impacts the simulation of tropospheric variability. Furthermore, papers are welcome which analyze the persistence time scale of the annular modes, its controlling factors, and the performance of models in simulating its temporal and spatial structure. We also encourage submissions which examine the sensitivity of stratospheric dynamics to climate change and the consequences of this sensitivity for tropospheric climate.
