Recent models of the Earth's magnetic field, derived from observatory and satellite data, provide evidence for rapid core field evolution on sub-annual to decadal time-scales. These rapid variations are particularly apparent in the secular acceleration, i.e. in the time derivative of the core field secular variation. How well is rapid field evolution captured by the current generation of field models? What is the origin of this signal? What processes in the core can give rise to such patterns of field evolution? We seek contributions addressing these topics, from both observational and theoretical perspectives.
