Onshore analogues to passive margins and the response of the continent to margin formation
Convener: Per Terje Osmundsen  | Co-Convener: Gianreto Manatschal

Concepts of passive margin evolution have benefitted greatly from analogue studies, and in this session, we will focus on how onshore geology is applied to shed light on tectonic processes at passive margins. Approaches may be several; firstly, fragments of ancient passive margins preserved in mountain belts host large potential for improving our understanding of crustal thinning mechanisms, basin formation and magmatism at passive margins. Secondly, the formation of a passive margin may have profound consequences also for the inboard onshore geology in terms of uplift, erosion, landscape formation and sediment transport. Topics may for instance include: Structural evolution of passive margins as seen in onshore analogues; tectonics and sedimentation in half graben and supradetachment (high-b) basins; response of the continent to passive margin formation.

Invited speakers:

Emmanuel Masini:
`The tectono-sedimentary processes of hyper-extended domains of rifted margins: the Alpine and Pyrenean field analogues´ (preliminary title)

Torgeir B. Andersen:
`Evidence for hyper-extension in the pre-Caledonian margin of Baltica´
