Ocean dynamics and Air-sea interactions within the tropics

Observations and simulations of ocean circulation and marine atmosphere processes are rapidly growing for meso- to basin scale on diurnal to interannual time scale. This session will focus on tropical ocean dynamics as well as the local interaction with the overlying atmosphere. Of equal interest are the generation of temperature and salinity signals, particularly by ocean dynamics, and the interactions of surface ocean signals with the low-level atmosphere. Relevant processes in the ocean include deep and upper ocean circulation variability, mild SST gradients to sharp fronts, eddies, filaments, tropical instability waves, warm pools, cold tongues and eastern boundary upwelling. In the atmosphere, we seek studies related to ocean interaction with surface wind modulations, Madden-Julian waves, cyclones, and convective systems. Retroactions and coupling studies are naturally welcome, in coastal or open ocean areas, as well as work that relates the small scales to basin scale variations, or links variability on the synoptic to intraseasonal timescales to interannual variability.
