Pore Scale Characterization and Upscaling of Flow and Transport in Porous Media
Co-Conveners: Martin Thullner , Dani Or , S. Majid Hassanizadeh
Posters
 / Attendance Tue, 29 Apr, 17:30–19:00

This session aims to integrate contributions in quantify and upscale flow and (reactive) transport processes in porous media from the pore to the core (laboratory)-scales.

Characteristics of fluid flow and reactive transport in porous media are affected by processes spanning a wide range of spatial and temporal scales (from molecular adsorption and interfacial jump at a front to geologic dispersion at regional scales). Different physical processes may dominate at different scales and exert specific influences that shape the aggregated behavior of the transport process at larger scales. To resolve processes at dominant scales and advance the science required for upscaling pore scale phenomena to operational scales, we need to combine theoretical (e.g. CFD and pore network models) with observational and experimental (e.g. micromodel and column) approaches.

The session invites contributions on topics including (but not limited to): multi-scale computational and experimental studies of multiphase flow, reactive solute transport, virus and colloid adsorption and transport, biofilm growth, contact line and interface movement, as well as pore scale visualization.
