Hydro-meteorological hazards influence our environment and the society manning-fold. The operating natural processes need to be understood and the societal contexts have to be investigated. Such studies are in particular important due to its changing nature – in the environment, in the society, but also referring to the respective interactions. Herein, the determination of the changing pattern of risk and the effective risk mitigation strategies are most crucial. It is important to develop an advanced understanding of how global changes (related to environmental and climate change as well as socio-economical change) will affect the temporal and spatial patterns of hydro-meteorological hazards and associated risks. It is also important, how these changes can be assessed, modelled, and incorporated in sustainable risk management strategies (focusing on spatial planning, emergency preparedness and risk communication and including early warning system). Especially in the field of landslides, flood, avalanche and debris flows studies, a dynamic development has taken place in many regions in the world.
This session aims to attract scientists as well as practitioners. We are aiming to provide a floor for exchange for all kinds of introductions to effective risk management strategies. Case studies as well as conceptual approaches are most welcome. The emphasis is on new scientific advances including new monitoring approaches and modelling concept, but is also on “lessons learned” regarding the investigation of changing patterns of risks related to all kind of natural processes such as floods, debris flow, landslides, rock fall and avalanches. We are looking forward to in depth scientific discussion and a fruitful exchange of ideas form a range of disciplines.
