EVENT INFORMATION
It is becoming increasingly important to understand and incorporate human and climate change dimensions within hydrological research. The importance of this is reflected by the dedication of the next IAHS research initiative to understanding change in hydrology and society. Moreover, there is growing evidence of the significant influence of natural and anthropogenic climate change on the hydrological system, which in turn affects society. Young hydrologists embarking on their research careers are challenged to generate understanding of the water cycle that is robust to, or accounts for, nonstationarity of the studied system.

We therefore invite early career hydrologists to join distinguished experts for an open discussion on, How young scientists can contribute to ‘Hydrology in a Changing World’. The expert panel will consist of Prof. Alberto Montanari (University of Bologna), Prof. Jan Seibert (University of Zurich) and Prof. Markus Weiler (University of Freiburg) sharing their view on this research theme.

AIM
Catalyzed by the opinion of experts and formalised in an open discussion, the aim of this session is to identify several key features that should be considered in hydrological research in a changing world.

INTENDED OUTCOME
The overall ambition of the session is with interested participants to write a summary of the identified key contributions of young scientists to this important research theme.

TARGET AUDIENCE
MSc students, PhD candidates and early career postdoctoral researchers that want to increase their awareness of current and future research challenges within the hydrological sciences and to discuss and identify their potential contributions.

EVENT FORMAT
This event will open with each of the invited experts giving a 12 minute presentation on the future direction of their corresponding sub-theme and where they see the contribution of young scientists. This will be followed by an open discussion between members of the audience and the panel of experts with the ambition of establishing what the key contributions young hydrologists can make to ‘Hydrology in a Changing World’ over the next decade.

While you do not have to pre-register, young scientists are now invited to propose specific topics for discussion under the event theme and/or questions for the experts in an email to info@younghs.com.
