School outreach: a practical guide (co-organized)
Co-Convener: Sam Illingworth
Wed, 30 Apr, 17:30–19:00

Outreach is a word that we hear a lot these days; with many grant proposals requiring some form of outreach or knowledge exchange. One way in which this can be achieved is by going into schools and communicating with the students and the teachers, not just to inform them of the work that is being carried out by your research group, but to inspire the scientists of tomorrow.

In this short course, scientists with hundreds of hours of outreach experience in schools will present a practical guide to creating a successful and meaningful outreach activity for both high school and younger students. As well as the practicalities of setting up such schemes, the issues of targeting the appropriate schools, measuring the success of the venture, and reflecting on what has been learnt and how this can be used to drive future initiatives will also be discussed.

Speakers:
- Samuel Illingworth, University of Manchester
- Rosemarie Graves, University of Leicester
- Jane Robb, European Geosciences Union
