TM2 Successful fieldwork - An APECS and PYRN panel discussion |
Convener: Ruth Vingerhagen | Co-Convener: Alexandre Nieuwendam |

Fieldwork is an essential component of research. Often we only get one chance to get it right. This is especially true when travelling to remote locations (eg. the Arctic and Antarctica), where a broken piece of equipment could mean the end of the project.
In this panel discussion we have invited 4 speakers with extensive experience of fieldwork to share with the audience tips on planning and implementing a successful field season.
Topics we would aim to address are (but not limited to):
- Where to get funding for fieldwork and applying for permits
- Logistics (food, equipment, travel)
- Strategies to deal with equipment problems/bad weather etc.
The event will be organised by the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) and the Permafrost Young Research Network (PYRN).
The aim of this panel discussion is to inspire and to provide early career researchers with practical information to enable them to successfully lead their own projects in the field. In addition to providing early career scientists with sage advice from experienced field researchers, the meeting will provide a valuable opportunity for early career researchers to network with their peers.
Confirmed panelists: Bryn Hubbard (Aberystwyth University), Marc Oliva (University of Lisbon), Andreas Richter (University of Vienna) and John Connelly (Lund University).
