The Mesozoic is believed to have differed from our present world in multiple respects, such as climatic conditions of prolonged greenhouse phases, rapid palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental changes and patterns, unique palaeoceanographic conditions, and significant palaeoenvironmental and ecosystem changes. IGCP 609 addresses correlation, causes and consequences of significant short-term climate-environmental deteriorations and sea-level changes during greenhouse climate phases of Earth history. Predictions of future sea-level rise due to ongoing global change need a better understanding of the geological record, the causes and the feedback processes of past climate events and sea-level changes, especially during greenhouse and hothouse climate episodes.
