Tropical glaciers are valuable proxies for past and current climate change and are important water resources for many communities. These glaciers have unique mass balance regimes due to low temperature seasonality and interannual variability but high precipitation seasonality and interannual variability. The sensitivity of these glaciers to changes in humidity, cloudiness, and temperature lapse rate is relatively poorly understood in comparison to the effects of temperature and precipitation variability on mass balance. Also, many of these climatological variables are linked to changes in larger-scale atmospheric and oceanic circulations, affecting tropical glaciers on a variety of timescales. This session explores topics relating to past, present, and future changes of tropical glaciers. We invite site-specific and regional-scale observational and modeling glacier studies, alpine climate records, and connections of larger-scale circulation changes and climate dynamics that may influence glacier fluctuations. We also encourage submissions on the biological and societal impacts of continued tropical glacier retreat.
