Public information: |
The motion of the debate is: Sustainable development is impossible in the Arctic The retreat of sea ice and global warming in general will open the Arctic to various types of development, particularly transport, fisheries, energy and mineral resources and tourism. All these activities will have a major impact on the fragile Arctic environment. Stringent measures, including the creation of internationally recognised "no-go" zones, may be needed to prevent irreversible changes. These and related issues will be addressed in the Great Debate Speakers: Michael Tjernström, Stockholm University Antje Boetius, Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremen |
