Remote sensing of hydrology in high latitudes
Convener: Annett Bartsch  | Co-Convener: Anna Liljedahl

Remote sensing has been widely shown to be of high value to monitor components of the water cycle in high latitudes. The vast Arctic land area is covered by several millions of lakes which relate to permafrost and glacial processes. The rivers which flow into the Arctic Ocean belong to the largest basins globally. Both, temporal and spatial variations of rivers and lakes are closely linked to snow melt patterns. Thawing and refreeze cycles are crucial for environmental conditions in the high latitudes.
This session especially invites contributions regarding monitoring of surface water (lakes, rivers, inundation), water in soils (including freeze/thaw cycles) and quantifying storage in snow, mountain glaciers and ice sheets in the Arctic.
