NP6.5

Bio Environmental Turbulence and Pattern Formation
Convener: Wolf-Gerrit Fruh  | Co-Convener: Jaume Piera

With a clear interdisciplinary perspective, this session will focus on hydrodynamics as a major determinant on biogeochemical and ecological processes in different aquatic ecosystems and at different scales.
Accordingly, we invite contributions covering a wide range of questions and scales, for instance, microbial and particle structure as influenced by mechanical energy in the water column, interaction between mixing layer dynamics and biological productivity, effect of small-scale turbulence on gas and nutrient diffusion at the cellular boundary layers, mathematical models of physical-chemical-biological interactions, or examples of the biological control on fluid dynamics (e. g. ecosystem engineering).
We also welcome contributions on novel approaches in bio modelling, in particular those accounting for feedbacks between species, as well as those such as plankton upscaling from microscale dynamics to macroscale fluxes. We also welcome experimental or conceptual studies focusing on Remote sensing to derive statistics on complex structures on soil or water bodies, such as forest gaps, grassland taxonomy patches or spiral eddies in the Ocean, thus providing insight into the spatial and temporal distribution of the flow topology.
