A large component of the ERA-CLIM project is dedicated to data rescue, with a strong focus on the early 20th-century upper-air record, as well as data from sparsely observed tropical and high-latitude regions. ERA-CLIM participants are engaged in ongoing global efforts and partnerships in the area of data rescue, such as the ACRE initiative. Project activities in this area include:

- Extensive inventorisation of recoverable climate observations in many parts of the world;
- Application of a systematic collaborative approach to imaging and digitisation;
- Improvement of the Comprehensive Historical Upper-Air Network (CHUAN) data collection;
- Contributions to the International Surface Pressure Databank (ISPD);
- Development of databases for metadata and image data associated with observations.
