Atmospheric large-scale climate modes, teleconnections, and climate regimes play a key role in understanding climate variability over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales.

Several major topics will be considered in this session:

1) Theoretical advances in identification and understanding the large-scale modes.

2) The impacts of the large scale on different time scales.

3) The predictability of the large-scale modes.

4) The application of new linear or non-linear statistical methods to the investigation of the large-scale modes.

5) Decadal variability variability and trends in large-scale modes as derived from observational data, high resolution proxy data, and long-term model simulations.

Among the modes covered are the North Atlantic Oscillation, the Arctic Oscillation/Northern Annular Mode, Southern Annular Mode, the Pacific-North American pattern, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation.
