Women in Geosciences and 'What can EGU do for Women Geoscientists?'
Convener: Kerstin Lehnert  | Co-Conveners: Tuija Pulkkinen , Gerald Ganssen , Bruce D. Malamud
Oral Programme
 / Mon, 03 May, 15:30–18:00  / Room D

Women unquestionably play a fundamental role in the Earth Sciences as demonstrated through their major contributions in research, teaching, or community support and leadership at all levels in the academic, corporate, and political world. Nevertheless, demographics show a significant underrepresentation of women in the geosciences in most countries that increases dramatically at senior level positions and functions. What are the reasons for this ‘leak in the pipeline’ and what can be done to fix them? This townhall meeting will begin with two presentations, one on a case example of a 'senior' woman and her experiences, and the second on mentoring schemes available. The presentations will be followed by a discussion how the EGU as a professional association can take a more active role in influencing and promoting equal opportunities for women in the geosciences.

The reception is a networking opportunity for Women in Geoscience. It is held in conjunction with the Earth Science Women's Network.
