Explaining the diversity of planetary interior dynamics and magnetic fields

Magnetic field measurements from new planetary missions confirm that the planetary magnetic fields are surprisingly different.
Advances in numerical algorithms and computing power allow for increasingly realistic dynamo simulations that aim at explaining this diversity.
Recent ab-initio calculations, interior models, and thermal evolution models provide important and more reliable constraints for the dynamics.
New laboratory experiments contribute by exploring the fundamental flow and magnetic instabilities at parameter regimes not accessible to numerical simulations.
This session aims at bringing together scientists from different communities for
an up-to-date overview of the manifold magnetic fields and interior dynamics in solar systems planets and exoplanets with a focus on the dynamo processes. Contributions dealing with magnetic field generation in moons should feel equally at home.
