Recent natural disasters and the growing inter-dependencies of the different elements of society all point towards the fact that the different types of hazards and risks are interconnected. However, scientists, engineers, civil protection and disaster managers usually treat hazards and risks individually. This leads to the causal, spatial and temporal relationships between different hazards and risks to be ignored, resulting in the possibility of existing mitigation plans being inefficient. This session calls for presentations dealing with the assessment of multi-type hazards and risks, with a focus on the propagation of uncertainties, cascade (domino) effects, time-dependency, and case studies where the inclusion of multi-type approaches, where before only single-type approaches were followed, would have been of benefit.
