Preparing for the next strong earthquake. Ideas and suggestions for all the actors involved in risk reduction
Convener: Tiziana Lanza  | Co-Conveners: Massimo Crescimbene , Federica La Longa

The scientific community has reached a good level of knowledge about earthquakes. We know that in the next years strong earthquakes will occur in some countries’ region. We also know how important they will be. Concerning “when” scientists are still far from being able to predict all the aspects of large impending earthquakes. Nevertheless a dialogue in this field could also bring important contribution. This session invites all those involved in risk reduction and operating in the different fields to gather together for a useful brainstorming especially for those countries where strong earthquakes are expected in the near future.
We encourage a discussion about the different measures and actions taken in the different countries with respect to risk reduction. At the same time we invite to meditate in which field they should be better developed: scientific, institutional, educational, civil protection. The scientific community today face the problem of a proper knowledge transfer to the public. Outreach and education are fundamental within the risk reduction strategies. We invite all those operating in the field to bring new ideas for inducing the media to improve the educative trend rather than insist in their speculative attitude. The final goal is to gather experiences to identify the most effective guidelines and measures for risk reduction.
