In scientific publishing, there are two end-member models: pay-to-read and open access. The first model is currently most widely used: libraries buy subscriptions to individual journals or bundles of publications and make the material accessible to their customers. The cost of publication is carried by the reader. There is a general push towards open-access publishing at the moment. In this model, anyone can access journal articles once they are published. The cost of publishing is carried by the author. In this workshop an overview of the publishing landscape is given and pros and cons of the two models are discussed.
