Rivers and deltas are major parts of fluvial systems that lead to sediment rooting and then deposition at the interface between river systems and marine or lacustrine standing water bodies. Modern rivers and deltas support large populations while ancient are key targets for resources. As rivers and deltas respond to autocyclic and allocyclic controlling parameters such as tectonics and climate that drive modification in basin physiography, water discharge, sediment supply and base-level change, they form intricate and diversified systems. Since decades, ongoing efforts have been undertaken on the comprehension of their (1) physical, geochemical and biological processes, (2) depositional architectures and (3) expression in the geological record.
As a consequence, this session will encompass all aspects of modern and ancient rivers and deltas. Studies focusing on depositional processes and resulting facies associations as well as stratigraphic architecture and controlling factors are encouraged. The session interest shall reflect the diversity of investigations on rivers and deltas and trigger fruitful discussions.
