Some gases like CO2 are produced but not consumed in the soil, and are transported then through the profile into the atmosphere. Additionally, other gases like N2O and CH4 can be re-consumed or have different end-products. This session will focus on all the measurements of soil gases concentration and efflux that can help to understand the temporal and spatial variability of their production and consumption in the soil when these measurements are combined with transport processes quantification (by modelling for instance).
We will also include approaches considering (i) the isotopic signature as they can be valuable for processes understanding and (ii) other gases like Radon or noble gases as they can be used to derive transport conditions and aeration status of soils. We will also try to have a look on more exotic gases like VOCs, CO and H2 and welcome also all other innovative approaches for soil gas sampling, measurements and modelling.
