The available paleomagnetic data can provide us a picture of the temporal and spatial behavior of the geomagnetic field since the most Earth’s remote times up to the recent Holocene. Well-dated paleomagnetic data have shown how the long-term variation of the geomagnetic field is characterized by different temporal fluctuations such as reversals, excursions, and the so-called archeomagnetic jerks. The acquisition of accurate directional and intensity paleomagnetic data is fundamental to constrain these variations allowing us to have a better knowledge of the dynamo processes in the Earth’s outer core. In that context, this session aims to highlight the most recent studies focused on the study of the past evolution of the Earth’s magnetic field with particular interest on the acquisition of new data for time periods poorly covered and geographic areas with scarce paleomagnetic records. In addition, new and novel techniques applied to paleomagnetic data as well as regional and global paleo/archeomagnetic models are welcome.
