There are many destructive earthquakes and tsunamis in the world. For instance, 1999 Izmit Earthquake in Turkey, 2004 Sumatra Earthquake/Tsunami in Indian Ocean, 2008 Sichuan Earthquake in China and 2011 East Japan Earthquake/Tsunami in Japan etc. Recently 2016 Central Italy earthquake occurred.
Based on lessons learnt from these destructive earthquakes/tsunami, we have to
prepare the next earthquakes/tsunamis for the disaster mitigation and recovery. In the lesson from 1999 Izmit earthquake, according to historical earthquakes, epicenters are shifting from East to West along the North Anatolian Fault. The Marmara Sea should be focused on because of a seismic gap in the North Anatolian Fault. In the Marmara region, there is Istanbul city with high population density, so, the seismic risk seems to be the same condition of Tokyo as Metropolitan city. Therefore, Japan and Turkey can share our experiences gained from past destructive earthquakes and we can prepare for expected large Earthquakes and Tsunamis in cooperation with each other as SATREPS project. In this session, not only SATREPS researches, but also presentations on newly obtained results on Earthquake hazard and disaster mitigation in other research fields are very much welcome.
