Hydrological risk under a gender and age perspective (co-organized)
Convener: Enrica Caporali  | Co-Conveners: Elena Toth , Bruce D. Malamud
PICOs
 / Thu, 27 Apr, 15:30–17:00

This session examines hydrological risk from a gender and age perspective, particularly in light of the Hyogo and the Sendai frameworks for Disaster Risk Reduction which focus on the design and implementation of “gender-sensitive” disaster risk reduction plans and programmes.
Substantial efforts in many communities have been devoted to enhance preparedness to hydrological and meteorological extremes. However, interactions among stakeholders, particularly with respect to gender and age differences, still need further study, analysis and understanding. People of different gender and age are not impacted in the same way by flood and drought events, and, especially in developing countries, the difficulties in enhancing the existing capabilities to adapt are sometimes exacerbated by socially-determined differences in roles, responsibilities and decision-making power and in the access to assets and resources.
This session solicits, from both physical and social scientists, contributions on the role of gender and age differences in hydrological risk assessment and management. Contributions might include, but are not limited to the following: gender- and age-differentiated impacts of flood and drought events, differences in risk training and in risk perception, roles in the pre-/during/post-emergency phases, development of age and gender-sensitive policies in hydrometeorological risk reduction programmes.
