Unique Amendments for Soil and Water Conservation
Convener: Seyed Hamidreza Sadeghi  | Co-Convener: Zeinab Hazbavi
Mon, 24 Apr, 10:30–12:00

This course will provide information on the use of soil amendments, a cost effective in situ process for soil and water conservation, remediation, revitalization, and reuse of many types of disturbed and contaminated landscapes. This course also focuses on amendments that are environmentally friendly like biochar. Biochar amendment can be seen as a potentially effective adaptation strategy that could contribute, alongside other adaptation practices, towards amelioration of periods of water stress with significant implications in terms of the production stability and water savings. Considering the increasing amount of organic agricultural and urban wastes, there is an urgent need for a sustainable strategy that allows the management and reduction of these kinds of residues. The shift toward a bio-based economy will probably promote the application of by-products from bioenergy productions as either soil amendments or fertilizers. Hence, biochar has been proposed as a novel tool for ac hieving this goal.
In summary my outlines for this course will be as following:
1- A brief overview on types of amendments which used for soil and water conservation as well as soil erosion control
2- A brief overview on selecting soil amendments
3- Biochar production methods
4- Introduction on the different biochar
5- Practical examples from small and large-plot scales application of soil amendments especial Biochar as a novel amendment in Iran.

In my idea this course is useful for all students who studied in natural resources, soil physics, land management, watershed management, agriculture, environment sciences and so on.
