Being able to write about science for a non-technical audience is a skill required of scientists all the time. Yet, it can be tricky to acquire. This short course will cover the basics of writing for a non-technical audience. Together, we will look at how to promote and communicate geoscience research using the written word, via popular science articles and via press releases. The course will consist of: an introduction on how to identify a good science story; general tips on how to write with clarity and flair; an introduction on how to go about promoting your work via press releases and working with embargoes; tips on working with press officers and journalists; practical exercises on headline writing; and practical exercises about turning abstracts into press releases.
