Plastic Oceans UK have been experts on plastic pollution for nearly a decade - solving the plastic crisis through their science, sustainability and education programmes. This all began with the award-winning documentary A Plastic Ocean, now available for streaming on Netflix.

Through changing attitudes, behaviours and practices on the use and value of plastics, we can stop plastic pollution reaching the ocean within a generation.

Come along to the screening of A Plastic Ocean to understand the impacts of plastic pollution around the world, what action we can take to stop plastics entering our natural world and pose your questions to the film's producer, Jo Ruxton, at the end of film.

Since 2006, the German Geophysical Society (DGG) promotes the C.F. Gauss Lecture within the frame of the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). Selected authors give an in-depth overview on a specific field of geophysics. The C.F. Gauss Lecture will be accompanied by a reception for members and friends of the DGG before it starts. All delegates of the EGU2019 are invited to participate.

This lecture has been presented each year since 1981 and is one of the principal events in the British Geophysical Association calendar. The Bullerwell lecture, named after the first Chief Geophysicist of the British Geological Survey, is a prestigious event that has been given by many of those UK geophysicists (see below) who are major international Earth Scientists, receiving honours from a wide range of learned societies, academic and governmental institutions. This years recipient is Dr. Sanne Cottaar of Cambridge University. Dr Sanne Cottaar studies the structure, composition, and dynamics of the deep Earth, and their relationship to surface processes and planet history. Her approach is both data-driven, hunting for clues constraining the deep Earth; and forward-modelling, predicting the possibilities and limitations of seismic data based on recent results in mineral physics and geodynamics. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MSc from the University of Utrecht.

During the sixties, the new Plate Tectonics paradigm was established. At a recent international meeting (Collège de France, Paris, 2018), discussions arose on whether for the first time it would be possible to relate without ambiguity plate tectonics and mantle dynamics.
In this presentation, the author shares this point of view and explains why he does so.

On the linkage between humans, precipitation patterns, and floods

The growing frequency of extreme hydrologic events over multi-decadal timescales is becoming increasingly apparent at the global scale. In addition, the synchronous increase of population in flood prone areas intensifies further the impacts associated with these extreme flood events with significant societal, environmental and ecological consequences. A correct management of the impacts of extreme flood and storm events requires a greater understanding of the processes that drive them. A great challenge in such understanding is to discern whether shifts in processes, such as shifts in streamflows, also bears the signature of human activity, and if such signature is coincident (or not) with major shifts in rainfall patterns. This talk will provide an overview about this complex set of interactions, and will showcase some study cases where human drivers, rainfall patterns and floods have been analysed.

Rare element pegmatite fields host critical elements that are crucial for the high-tech industry (Li, Nb,
Ta, etc.). In contrast to the traditional genetic model involving large parental fertile granites, recent
studies suggest that such pegmatite fields can directly derive from anatectic melts. The offered one day
field trip to the St. Radegund area (Styria, Austria) will target one such field, where migmatites,
simple pegmatites, leucogranites and spodumene pegmatites are exposed within the Austroalpine
Unit (Eastern Alps). 8 key outcrops will be visited along a profile through the pegmatite field, providing
an exceptional insight into the genetic relationships between migmatites and spodumene pegmatites.
The field observations will be discussed together with geochemical and geochronological data acquired
on the visited outcrops and the surrounding area. (https://sites.google.com/site/alexisplunder/egu2019)

A field trip guide will be given to the participants. The bus trip from Vienna to St. Radegund will take
approximately 2 hours. Additional geological information will be provided during this time. The field
trip includes a 3 hours walk on good hiking trails.

The field trip is organized by the Geological Survey of Austria and the University of Leoben.
