Substorm injections and their influence on the variability of the trapped particle population in the inner magnetosphere
Convener: Christos KatsavriasECSECS | Co-conveners: Matina Gkioulidou, Richard Horne, Wen Li

Substorm injections play a fundamental role in radiation belt and ring current dynamics. These injections introduce a broad energy range of electrons, protons and heavier ions in the inner magnetosphere and give birth to plasma waves that can further alter its dynamics via acceleration or resultant particle precipitation. The aim of this session is to address the contribution of substorm injections to the variability of the outer radiation belt, ring current and plasmasphere and to establish their role in nowcasting and forecasting models of these trapped particle populations.
Theoretical and model contributions, as well as observational studies using data from recent space missions (ERG-Arase, Cluster, MMS, THEMIS, Van Allen Probes, etc.) are encouraged.
