Introduction to time series analysis for Earth scientists
Co-organized by BG2/CL6/NP9/SSP5
Convener: Matthias SinnesaelECSECS | Co-conveners: Christian Zeeden, David De Vleeschouwer, Ricardo N. SantosECSECS

Within this course, the attendees are taught how to identify possible cyclicities in paleoclimate data (e.g., sediments, speleothems) or any other geological record. We will start from the basics of which data can be analysed, go over power spectra, and discuss the application of filters and Wavelet Analysis. We will discuss advantages and disadvantages of different methods, and give some examples from Earth Sciences to highlight common pitfalls. Aim of this course is to give a brief overview of the most common techniques, and give participants the insight to prepare and analyse their data themselves. A variety of computational platforms are available for time-series analysis. In this course, we will introduce different tools and techniques by making use of the programming language R.
