EOS4.4 | Adaptation knowledge and solutions for a climate resilient Europe: from science to governance
Adaptation knowledge and solutions for a climate resilient Europe: from science to governance
Convener: Antti-Ilari Partanen | Co-conveners: Joonas Merikanto, Jörg Cortekar, Daniela Jacob
Europe needs practical solutions to address and manage the current and emerging impacts of climate change. This session focuses on the key European adaptation challenges, and on the strategies needed to combine European research, policy, and investment for an efficient and future-resilient ground-level delivery. It will review and build on the key findings from IPCC AR6 WGII Chapter 13: Europe. We invite discussion on how resilient Europe is to climate change now at global warming of 1°C, and what are the solution spaces and adaptation options for climate resilient development. Topic would include:

• Marine, coastal, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems and their services
• Water (flooding, coastal erosion, freshwater scarcity)
• Food, fibre, and other ecosystem products
• Cities and infrastructure
• Health, wellbeing, and communities
• Vulnerable livelihoods and social inequality
• Inter-regional impacts

Further, for effective policy responses, the presenters are asked to discuss what metrics should be used for measuring the resilience and the effectiveness of adaptation actions, and how these metrics can be calibrated by past climate and climate variability. The outcome of these discussions will be key input to the sixth European Climate Change Adaptation Conference in June 2023 (ECCA2023).
