Advancements in forest demography for the next-generation Earth & Land System Models
Convener: Arthur ArglesECSECS | Co-conveners: Annemarie Eckes-ShephardECSECS, Rosie Alice Fisher, Peter Cox, Thomas Pugh
The size and age structure of the trees in forests, collectively known as forest demography, is believed to be important for how fast newly planted forests will absorb carbon and is also an important determinant of the resilience of forests to disturbances such as drought and fire. As a results, some Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVMs) have started to introduce aspects of plant demography within large-scale Earth and Land System Models (ESM/LSM). There is a diversity of approaches to implementing demography within DGVMs. Developments vary in the degree of process representation and complexity including competition, mortality, disturbances, regrowth, recruitment, and functional diversity. This session invites submissions related to: models of forest demography; constraints from observational records of tree-size and patch-age; the impacts of forest demography on the land carbon sink in the context of Net Zero policies.
