SSS10.2 | Modelling soil structure and functions – current challenges and open questions
Modelling soil structure and functions – current challenges and open questions
Convener: Sara KönigECSECS | Co-conveners: Holger Pagel, Thibaut Putelat, Lindsay Todman
Combining different interrelated functions and processes of a complex system such as soil remain rather challenging. With this session, we want to address several open questions for tackling this challenge, including (but not limited to):
What are the relevant metrics representing key soil functions and defining soil quality?
What biological processes do we need to consider for modelling soil functions?
How much details are needed to adequately describe the system, while keeping models simple enough for understanding their dynamics?
What can we gain from such models to optimize field experiments?
How important is the incorporation of spatial heterogeneity?
We invite contributions on theoretical concepts and mechanistic models for simulating soil structure and/or functions; as well as experimental or field studies which may help to improve modelling approaches.
We especially aim at stimulating trans-disciplinary discussions between scientists from soil science and beyond.
