Stream gauging with audible sound: equipment, acoustic demo, and opportunities

This breakout session will introduce a new non-contact method for measuring streamflow using audible sound (see the reference at the bottom). The method addresses some of the issues with traditional stream gauging methods. The session will be divided into three parts:

(1) An introduction to acoustic sensing.

(2) During the interactive demonstration, participants will have the chance to listen to audio clips recorded in a real stream and measure the sound level using their smartphones with a sound level app, such as Decibel X. They will be able to create an acoustic rating curve (sound level vs. discharge) for the stream.

(3) The discussion section will cover potential collaboration opportunities, benefits for early adopters, research and applications in diverse field settings, and the potential for citizen science.
