Respiration’s "forgotten half" — O₂ flux — and the counter wise CO₂ flux hold the key to microbial metabolism, abiotic processes, and carbon cycling. The respiration quotient RQ includes information about metabolic states and processes from microbes to soils and entire ecosystems. We unite microbial ecologists, biogeochemists, and atmospheric scientists to overcome O₂ measurement challenges.
