This session brings together scientists, scholars, and engineers researching, teaching, and applying innovative measurement and monitoring techniques to analyze sedimentary, hydro-morphological, and hydraulic/hydrodynamic processes in open water environments such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, and coasts. The focus is on evaluating sediment transport phenomena—bed load, suspended load, bedform and channel migration, bed armoring, and colmation—along with modes of transport, flocculation, settling, and re-suspension. Integration of hydraulic and hydrodynamic measurements supports a comprehensive understanding of flow and morphodynamic interactions.
The session also promotes integrating nature-based solutions to enhance sediment management, reduce erosion, and improve ecosystem resilience. Contributions are invited on single and combined measurement techniques, post-processing methods, innovative monitoring approaches, and applications in both field and laboratory settings. Insights on sediment budgets, hydraulic and hydrodynamic analyses, and sedimentary and morphodynamic processes across temporal and spatial scales are welcome.
Topics include:
- Suspended and bed load sediment transport measurements with optical, acoustic, sampling, tracer, or other techniques.
- Hydraulic and hydrodynamic measurements (velocity, turbulence, resistance, energy dissipation).
- Sediment characterization using samplers or freeze-core methods.
- Innovative approaches for validating and calibrating numerical and hydrodynamic models.
- Critical bed shear stress measurements of cohesive sediments.
- Monitoring morphological changes: sedimentation, erosion, armoring, meandering.
- Measurement networks, multi-point datasets, and large or small-scale monitoring concepts.
- In-situ or lab calibration, including machine learning approaches.
- Applications of nature-based solutions, such as wetland restoration, riparian buffers, and living shorelines.
