Climate change is increasingly interacting with rapid urbanization, socioeconomic transformation, environmental degradation, and uneven development across Asia. Floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, sea-level rise, salinity intrusion, landslides, etc., and compound extremes are affecting communities, ecosystems, infrastructure, livelihoods, and economic development. These challenges are particularly significant in emerging and developing regions, where high exposure often coincides with limited resources, institutional constraints, and social inequalities.
At the same time, communities, governments, researchers, and other actors across Asia are developing diverse ways to anticipate, absorb, adapt to, and transform in response to climate risks. Understanding which approaches are effective, under what conditions, and how they can support long-term climate-resilient development remains a major scientific and policy challenge.
This session brings together interdisciplinary research on the assessment, mechanisms, practices, and pathways of climate resilience in emerging and developing Asia. We welcome contributions that connect climate hazards and environmental change with social, institutional, technological, and policy responses, including:
Measurement and assessment of climate resilience and climate-resilient development
Innovative technologies, modelling approaches, and nature-based solutions for climate adaptation
Empirical case studies, best practices, and lessons from successful and unsuccessful resilience initiatives
Governance, institutional capacity, and policy mechanisms for climate resilience
Community resilience, socio-cultural dimensions, equity, justice, and local knowledge
Methodological advances in climate resilience research, including GIS, remote sensing, participatory methods, and data-driven approaches
Adaptation pathways, transformative resilience, and opportunities for scaling up effective solutions
Theoretical, conceptual, comparative, and review studies on climate resilience in emerging and developing Asia.
