From groundwater monitoring to decision-making: Indicators, data and tools across scales for water quality and quantity

Groundwater resources face increasing pressures from climate change, abstraction, pollution and other human activities, requiring integrated approaches to assess groundwater quality and quantity and to support sustainable management. While monitoring provides the essential evidence base, heterogeneous monitoring networks, methods and assessment criteria still limit comparability and integration across Europe.
This session will explore how monitoring data, indicators, modelling and mapping tools can be harmonized and integrated to move from observations towards decision-making. A particular focus is on translating heterogeneous observations and scientific knowledge into robust, spatially explicit information that supports ground water management across scales, from water bodies to national and European assessments.
Contributions may address groundwater levels and storage, recharge and abstraction, natural baselines, trend assessments, anthropogenic pressures, uncertainty assessment, data harmonization, and the development of indicators and decision-support tools.
The session welcomes approaches supporting the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and Groundwater Directive, as well as broader European initiatives such as the EU Water Resilience Strategy and the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU).
