Hydrological extremes: from droughts to floods
Convener: Wouter Berghuijs | Co-conveners: Gregor Laaha, Manuela Irene Brunner, Miriam BertolaECSECS

Floods and droughts have major impacts on society and ecosystems and are projected to become more frequent and severe with climate change. This session seeks to unite the flood and drought research communities by studying the similarities in their processes and study approaches to identify synergies. We aim to deepen understanding of the processes governing these hydrological extremes and their interplay, develop robust methods for data analysis and modeling of floods and droughts and their transitions, assess the influence of global change on hydro-climatic extremes, and study the socio-economic and environmental impacts of both types of extremes. We seek studies where:
- (new) methods advance process understanding
- the inclusion of that understanding advances indicators, analysis, and modeling.
- methods are demonstrated to be fit for purpose, transparant, and robust.
We welcome submissions that present insightful flood and/or drought research, including case studies, large-sample studies, statistical hydrology, and analyses of flood or drought non-stationarity under the effects of climate-, land cover-, and other anthropogenic changes. Studies that investigate both extremes, or their interplay, are of particular interest.
