River basins are increasingly affected by compound, sequential, and spatially clustered hydro-climatic extremes. At the same time, many basins have interconnected reservoirs, diversions, and regulated river reaches. These systems can change how extreme events move through a catchment. Reservoir storage and operational decisions can amplify, reduce, delay, or transfer these effects. Therefore, studying individual reservoirs or isolated extreme events may not fully capture the response of the entire basin.
This session aims to advance understanding of cascading hydrological extremes and basin-scale responses in regulated river systems. We welcome observational, theoretical, statistical, and modelling studies addressing the interactions between hydro-climatic extremes, catchment processes, reservoir storage and releases, and downstream hydrological responses.
Topics of interest include: compound and sequential floods and droughts; dependence structures and spatial propagation of hydrological extremes; hydrological connectivity in regulated basins; multi-reservoir and basin-scale hydrological modelling; reservoir storage, yield and reliability under climate variability and change; forecast-informed and adaptive reservoir operation; real-time hydrological forecasting and flood routing; and interactions between extreme precipitation, snowmelt, glacier melt, reservoir inflows, and downstream discharge.
We welcome contributions using remote sensing and Earth observation, hydroinformatics, telemetry, data assimilation, machine learning, and hybrid physics–data-driven approaches to improve monitoring, prediction, and understanding of cascading hydrological responses. Studies from a wide range of hydro-climatic and physiographic settings, including mountain, snow- and glacier-fed, monsoon, temperate, tropical, arid and semi-arid basins are encouraged, as are comparative studies across different hydro-climatic settings and regulated and unregulated river systems.
The session seeks to bring together researchers working across hydrological observations, process-based and statistical modelling, forecasting, Earth observation, and water-resources management to identify common mechanisms controlling cascading hydrological responses and to develop improved approaches for understanding and managing extremes in regulated river basins.
