Promoting and supporting inclusive excellence in the geosciences
Co-sponsored by AGU and JpGU
Convener: Claudia Jesus-Rydin | Co-conveners: Hori, S. Rie, Hannah Sophia DaviesECSECS, Billy Williams, Robyn Pickering

Since 2016, this session series has provided a welcoming forum for discussing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the geosciences. At a time when EDI initiatives are facing significant challenges in many parts of the world, we invite researchers, practitioners, decision-makers and policy analysts to join us in sharing experiences, exchanging ideas and identifying actions that can help build a more inclusive, equitable and supportive geoscience community.

The session will explore the factors contributing to the under-representation of different groups—including those defined by gender identity, sexual orientation, racial and cultural background, disability, religion, nationality or geography, socioeconomic status, age and career stage—and will provide an opportunity for constructive dialogue on both persistent challenges and effective solutions.

We welcome contributions that present research, data, case studies, personal experiences or examples of good practice. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Role models who inspire and support others through their experiences and/or their contributions to advancing equality, diversity and inclusion.
• Evidence of imbalanced representation, preferably supported by data, in awards, medals, grants, leadership positions, invited talks and publications.
• Perceived and structural barriers to inclusion at the individual, institutional and cultural levels.
• New and innovative approaches to identifying and overcoming barriers.
• Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) in European host institutions: successes, challenges and lessons learned.
• Effective initiatives and best practices, including:
- mentoring programmes;
- professional networks;
- targeted funding schemes;
- institutional initiatives; and
- conference and meeting practices that foster inclusion.

We particularly encourage contributions that reflect on the impact of recent socio-political developments on EDI activities, as well as experiences of sustaining or advancing inclusive practices in changing institutional, national or international contexts.

The session is co-organised with support from the European Research Council (ERC).
