Inclusion of traditional and indigenous knowledge and governance of indigenous data in geosciences
Convener: Giulio Castelli | Co-conveners: Wouter Buytaert, Darío PérezECSECS, Natalie Ceperley

Knowledge co-creation can be defined as a collaborative process, focused on an iterative interaction leading to new knowledge – e.g. a new understanding of a problem. A key element of co-creation is the inclusion and integration of diverse knowledge systems, including traditional and indigenous knowledge systems. Experiences of ways to recognize, valorize and integrate traditional and indigenous knowledge in geosciences in a just and equitable way are present but they still receive little attention and are not recognized as fundamental milestones towards more inclusive, effective, and sustainable scientific practices. This section welcomes experiences of inclusion of traditional and indigenous knowledge in geosciences, including reflections on the governance and management of indigenous data. Approaches focusing on the decolonization of geosciences, recognition of the role of native scientists and avoiding parachute sciences and data extractivism are particularly encouraged.
