Scientific software development dates back 80 years, however, software sharing is still a relatively new discipline, and many approaches and guidelines are still evolving. Research software is an essential component of modern geoscience, supporting data analysis, modelling, visualization, machine learning, and computational workflows. Like scientific data, software plays a critical role in enabling research outcomes, yet the effort involved in developing, adapting, maintaining, and applying software is often under-recognized.
In this session, we welcome contributions that demonstrate how software has enabled scientific discovery, streamlined research workflows, accelerated analysis, facilitated collaboration, or helped address geoscientific challenges. We particularly encourage real-world applications, case studies, lessons learned, and practical experiences from across the geosciences, including geophysics and seismology, environmental sciences, geochemistry, geomorphology, hydrogeology, and planetary sciences. Contributions may present software developed, adapted, or integrated to support scientific workflows, as well as best practices related to usability, reproducibility, FAIR and Open Science, interoperability, documentation, sustainability, and software reuse. Live demonstrations, videos, and interactive examples are particularly encouraged (supplementary materials can be hosted on the EGU27 platform for access after the conference).
Join us to share examples, experiences, and best practices that demonstrate the value of software as a research asset and help advance geoscience through more effective, accessible, and reusable scientific workflows.
