Stratospheric Dynamics and Connections to Surface Weather and Climate
Convener: Thomas Reichler | Co-conveners: Bo Christiansen, Seok-Woo Son, Blanca AyarzagüenaECSECS, Zheng WuECSECS

The stratospheric circulation exerts an important influence on tropospheric weather and climate. Key phenomena—including the stratospheric polar vortex, the Brewer–Dobson circulation, and the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation—modulate atmospheric wave propagation, drive downward dynamical influences on the troposphere, and control the transport and mixing of climatically important chemical constituents. Understanding, observing, and accurately simulating stratospheric dynamics are therefore essential for improving predictions of weather and climate variability and change. This session will examine the causes and consequences of variations in stratospheric circulation, including natural and anthropogenic drivers, chemical transport and mixing processes, stratosphere–troposphere coupling, and implications for weather and climate prediction. We welcome abstracts that address these topics from observational, modeling, or theoretical perspectives and across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales.
