Advanced Spectroscopic Measurement Techniques and Applications for Atmospheric Science
Convener: Dean Venables | Co-conveners: Weidong Chen, J. Houston Miller, Weixiong Zhao, Tobias D. SchmittECSECS

The "Advanced Spectroscopic Measurement Techniques and Applications for Atmospheric Science" session focuses on the development of novel spectroscopic methods and instrumentation and their use in atmospheric applications. These applications target measurements of concentrations and optical properties of atmospheric constituents, physical properties of the atmosphere, as well as the study of atmospheric processes in laboratories, atmospheric simulation chambers, and field deployments.
The session aims to be a forum for sharing information on the state-of-the-art and emerging developments in atmospheric sensing using spectroscopic methods.
Topics include developments, demonstrations and early applications of novel spectroscopic methods and instruments from the UV to THz spectral regions for measuring atmospheric aerosols, isotopologues, air pollutants, greenhouse gases and trace gases, as well as spectroscopic measurements of meteorological variables.
Spectroscopic methods include high sensitivity and selectivity spectroscopy (such as frequency comb spectroscopy, cavity-enhanced absorption/Raman spectroscopies, photoacoustic & photothermal spectroscopies), low-cost optical sensors, heterodyne radiometry, imaging spectroscopy, and wildfire detection and characterization.
Applications include laboratory and simulation chamber demonstrations, vertical concentration profiles and flux measurements. Submissions are also encouraged on novel adaptations of instruments to mobile platforms (e.g., vehicles, in backpacks, UAVs, ships and balloons) and on new spectral data analysis tools (including deep learning spectroscopy). Contributions from scientists and engineers in academic and scientific institutes, regulatory agencies, and commercial companies are welcomed.
