De-icing and salting decision making for surface transport including warning services
Convener: fraser ralston
Wed, 14 Sep, 15:00–17:00  / Room Marconi

An open debate concerning road, rail and runway deicing; both from an operational forecasting perspective and taking into account changing user requirements and expectations. We should also consider methods to communicate warnings of these ice type hazards to the wider audience. Forecast models have improved and evolved but much decision making comes down to fine detail and communication techniques. The various types of de-icing agents are also likely to increase demands on the forecaster/model. Can we learn from different approaches across Europe, both in how we add forecast detail, how this is communicated and improve the resulting action by the client. This session will primarily focus on road transport but also link into both runway and railway de-icing.
