Today, private industry is providing a democratisation of space (Space 4.0 or 'New Space') by supplying: launch vehicles, spacecraft, instruments, and astronauts. Citizen scientists are participating, too, by supplying spacecraft and themselves. The democratisation of space points to a large and exciting universe in which all parts of society are being engaged.

With such a democratisation of space, where governments are not the only entities building space activities, what are the new roles for astronauts in Space 4.0?

To be the first humans on new planetary bodies? To be the humans providing microgravity support to Earth-bound scientists? To be Space diplomats?

The planetary sciences are usually separate from the domain of human exploration due to the dominance of robotic spacecraft for its data acquisition. However, some planetary activities can be performed faster and better by humans.

What are the boundaries of artificial intelligence for space work? When does it make sense for humans to perform the tasks, instead?

Space 4.0 changes the roles of all interested players including the roles of human explorers. This EPSC 2017 Riga Public Lecture highlights these questions with experienced people who can give their perspective.

- Bernard Foing, ESA. Executive Director of the International Lunar Exploration Working Group (ILEWG) and was Principal Project Scientist for SMART-1, the first European mission to the Moon.
- Jose Luis Galache, Aten Engineering, Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Facilitator at NASA Frontier Development Lab, Former Acting Deputy Director Minor Planet Center, multi-cultural (US/UK/ES) planetary scientist.
- Pauls Irbins, Executive Director of Zinoo Science Centers, Space Activist, and Latvia's only candidate to ill-fated Mars One.

Plus: Kārlis Šadurskis, Minister of the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science, who will give an introduction.
