In the last decade, education at universities changed dramatically with the transition from ‘analog’ course documentation with printed scripts to digital learning environments with learning managing systems. Also new learning tools like Apps, annotated scripts, flipped classroom, online quizzes, videos and MOOCs (massive open online course) are currently offering many new possibilities in educating students in the disciplines of Earth Sciences. This is not only true for lectures in the classroom, but also in the field training, where GIS-based techniques are deployed for mapping the geology in digital mode.

The session welcomes contributions documenting the implementation of novel teaching approaches in Earth Science. Ideally, the contributions also assess the impact on the learning process and try to quantify it in terms of ‘Learning Analytics’.
